As humans, we are programmed to be over achievers and we are constantly pushing the boundaries of success and reaching for a higher standard. I am fortunate enough to coach incredible athletes and legitimate super humans on a daily basis. I’m going to share with you a few of the secrets that help build a champion. Whether you are an inspiring athlete or you just want to test your limits and excel, these secrets are guaranteed to help you!
Secret #1: Champions Have a Big Vision
Before you can become successful and achieve greatness, I believe that you need a clear target to aim your efforts at. Imagine trying to shoot a basketball in the dark where you can’t even see the hoop. Although it might be an interesting party trick, you would quickly get bored with not being able to see the target. When I coach, the first thing we establish is a clear, frightening target. For example, one young basketball players goal might be to play in the NBA All-Star game representing his team the LA Lakers. It’s a big scary goal that most non-driven people would say is impossible, however the champion truly and deeply believes that they can make it happen. If the vision isn’t big enough then the effort usually won’t be strong enough to even get them half way. Set that vision big and get excited about it (don’t worry it’s normal to feel a little scared and unsure about it)!
Secret #2: Champions Are Not Afraid to Fail
This is one of the biggest differences that I have seen over the years that separates the ones who make it big from the ones who make it nowhere. Most people are so concerned about how good they look that they are not willing to go outside their comfort zone because in that space there is a high chance that they could fail and look bad. The most successful athletes I’ve seen will go beyond their limits and fail if it means that they can learn from their mistakes and come back better than ever. If you are always winning or succeeding, than chances are you are never going to get better, you will just remain the same and that is not enough to become a great champion. The cycle that I preach to my athletes is LEARN–FAIL–GROW–REPEAT. To become great, you have to get comfortable with failing your way to the top.
Secret #3: Champions Are Ridiculously Consistent
Have you ever wanted to know what truly makes the best athletes in the world so good? Most people would say its talent that makes them great. I disagree. The secret sauce that champions are built on more than anything is consistency! To be great you have to be in it for the long haul – though all the ups AND downs. Day in and day out, you have to chip away at your craft with your head down and then one day, you will look up from your work and see a masterpiece right in front of your eyes.
Champions are relentless in their pursuit of becoming better and they will never be outworked. The stories of the greats like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are legendary… they were the first ones in the gym and on most nights, the last ones to leave. The average person would see that and wonder, why are they still working so hard, they have already won championships and set records? That’s because champions have an insatiable thirst for growing, learning, getting better and becoming legends!
If you choose to apply these three secrets to any area of your life that you want to improve, you will be well on your way to accomplishing anything that you desire, no matter how big it might seem. Set the vision, be willing to get outside your comfort zone where you will fail to learn, and be insanely consistent. The only reason why you wouldn’t get there is just because you stopped along the way. Keep going, always keep going.
