“Silence is the sleep that nourishes wisdom.” – Francis Bacon.
According to the dictionary definition, silence is: the complete absence of sound.
According to yoga teachings, the practice of silence is called mouna, the language of gods, and it means refraining to use voice to express.
There are numerous studies that show the incredible value of silence.
SPEAKING IS ONE OF THE MAJOR EXPRESSIONS OF THE HUMAN PERSONALITY AND IT IS PART OF HUMAN NATURE. If we cut off this sensory experience then the mind has to find other ways to express its energy. When you are interacting with people it is difficult to study yourself as you are focusing on them. If you are alone for an hour or more, even half an hour for a very busy person, you can gradually begin to observe and understand the functioning and patterns of the mind, which leads to self analysis and contemplation. You become more introverted and aware of your thoughts, desires, emotions, your own energy and the way it is shown to others around you.
Through silence we can get more physical and mental work done
The brain and nerves are soothed and meditation becomes easier.
Silence develops willpower, gives peace of mind, makes it easier to speak the truth and gives control over the speech.
It helps to control: Anger; Irritability; And the emotions
It is also useful for physical and mental healing. It brings serenity, calmness and leads to inner spiritual strength.
The reality that we have created is based on sound expression at all levels, starting from your voice and ending with the electronic reality that defines our modern times, cellphones, computers, television and so on. Even if you seem to manage not to speak for a while, there will always be a distracting sound around you to pull your attention away from yourself and cause you to redirect your focus at the sound of an alert or notification from a text, email or even a clock on the wall.
In modern times, the practice of silence would imply that you refrain from speech and it would also mean that you try and detach from any possible distractions or disturbances that could capture your attention or steal your focus from within.
There are minimal steps that are easy to practice to find comfort and healing within your own presence, by choosing to hold silence in your own home for just half an hour a day. During that specific time you can chose to turn off all devices in the space, and you can practice any type of comfortable activity for your mind, like:
Reading – Journaling – Contemplating
Creating anything that involves the use of both hands (knitting, coloring, even washing dishes, or gardening).
As long as your hands are moving while you are in silence, your brain hemispheres keep the balance, therefore calmness of mind and clarity of thought are the healing result, that is if you are choosing not to sit still and meditate during the silence.
Holding silence intentionally helps to redirect your energy. When you focus your attention inside, this allows you to stay connected to your well being, your inner comfort, clarity of mind and ease of emotions that might be draining or self damaging. Often times, feelings of low self-esteem or lack of confidence are a result of being disconnected with self and your inner guidance.
Just as you have daily hygiene practices that benefit your physical body, your mind also needs a daily clarity practice. This will allow for a more balanced and clear path for your thoughts which assists in good communication and expression.
Being able to maintain silence is one daily practice that can lead you to a better connection with self and ultimately source. With better focus within, you’ll find there is an ease that helps with everything from decision making, to understanding and developing better relationships with more clear paths of communication within those relationships. This can be reflected in compassion, understanding, patience and thoughtfulness. We are all looking for peace, clarity and healing and the most sured place to find all that we seek, is to look within.
