Lovechock has their heart in Chocolate – And Big Love for Mother Earth
Sweat Equity Magazine has been the number one source on…
We got the inside scoop from the thought leaders at Lovechock and learned about their plastic-free mission! They are taking actions to support their love for the planet, which is one of the three pillars of their corporate philosophy, and here is what they had to say about taking on the challenge to get :
Love for Mother Nature is firmly anchored in the heart of Lovechock. “Love for the planet” is one of the three pillars of Lovechock’s corporate philosophy. The earth gives us our superfoods like cacao, matcha and mulberries. We want to leave the earth to future generations as healthy as possible by deciding what we use and how we make our products.
That’s why in our role as pioneers – long before the European Union introduced a ban on free plastic bags to combat plastic waste – we set out to find a solution for an environmentally friendly packaging. The challenge was to find something that wasn’t aluminum or plastic, and that was still good enough to pack our beautiful chocolate.
Plastic Free Foil
Our chocolate bars are wrapped in foil that is 100% compostable made from a cellulose that can be composted at home. It’s made from wood pulp, that’s certified from sustainable forests (PEFC and FSC). This foil or cellulose looks like plastic but it’s plastic-free and can be disposed of in your green bin! We are proud to say that Lovechock has been plastic-free since 2011.
Here is the proof: the compost ability of our foil was tested by “cradle to cradle expert Jop Timmers. In a test, over a 90 day period, Jop buried foil from 16 bars of Lovechock in his own garden in Amsterdam together with a kiwi compostable-packaging foil from the Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn. The result? See for yourself.

Three months later, almost nothing remained of the Lovechock cellulose foil compared to the Kiwi-packaging from the supermarket.
Environmentally friendly Wrapper
The easily re-closeable PEFC carton wrapper is also environmentally friendly. It’s made from wood from sustainable forests, that also respect the socio-cultural values of the community.
Packaging redesign in the spirit of environmental protection
Lovechock has redesigned the packaging of its chocolate tablets in 2017 to give them a more stylish look and to reduce its environmental impact. But Chief Happiness Director Franziska Rosario saw further potential for environmental impact and wanted to further reduce the ecological footprint. With the relaunch of the packaging design it is possible:
- to reduce packaging material by around 20%
- to significantly reduce CO2 consumption, because the packaging material is no longer sourced in the USA, but locally in Holland
- to produce the complete packaging without bleaching
Chief Happiness Director Franziska Rosario: “A packaging that looks sophisticated, fresh and chic while being environmentally friendly – that’s possible! By redesigning our tablets, we have managed to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. After the complete abolition of plastic since 2011, we want to set an example in terms of environmental impact with our completely compostable packaging.“
Even the small steps count
Living consciously is part of our everyday life. While we still drive and fly, we try to consider the little things in our everyday lives, from waste separation at the office to train trips through Europe. We’re by no means perfect, but we challenge ourselves every day to think differently.
