Dig Deep. Break Your Negative Habits!
Mark Laham, MindBody Coach, seminar leader, and yoga teacher trainer,…
Remember ages ago I wrote an article about how to make your resolutions stick? How’s that going, anyway? Let’s take a minute to review one of the key points: “Why do you want what you want?” Do you even know? I’m not talking about the superficial reasons we believe are motivating our desires. I’m talking about your real underlying intentions. I’m talking about how you are truly vibrating about your desires.
When you’re motivated by the higher realms, such as courage, willingness, acceptance, reason, love, and joy, then you’re coming from a place of power, and you’re setting yourself up to receive the results you’re seeking.
You see, the “why” behind your actions makes a big difference because it’s the fuel that drives you forward. Are you being drained by negative emotions, or are you coming from a deeper place of power, from a more positive place?
When you’re coming at life from a negativity space, like guilt, shame, fear, pride, or frustration, then you’re coming at life from a place of force. ‘Force’ is self-defeating; and for every force exerted, there’s an equal and opposite counterforce. When you are motivated by negativity, you’re not receiving enough steam and energy to achieve the results you want. When you’re motivated by the higher realms, such as courage, willingness, acceptance, reason, love, and joy, then you’re coming from a place of power, and you’re setting yourself up to receive the results you’re seeking. Take a look back at different times in your life when you were motivated by some of the lower realms and consider whether you got the results you wanted.
Here are some tips to help figure out what your true motivations are and how to connect with the deeper power behind what you want.
Step 1 Ask the 7 Layers of Why
Often our motivation is a lie that we’re telling ourselves to avoid looking at what’s really going on inside. Whenever you desire something, ask yourself why this is something you want, and continue down “seven layers of why” until you find a deeper reasoning. You may be surprised by what you discover.
Step 2 Find a Better Feeling Place
If you’ve come to the conclusion that your deeper motivations were driven by the lower emotional realms, like shame, pride, or guilt, then how could you motivate yourself from a higher perspective? How could you let courage, willingness, or love be the motivating force, so that you’re fuelled from a place of power?
Step 3 Stay Focused on Your Intention
It’s easy to look at your current situation and lose faith in your vision. So, basically, you’re telling the universe what you want, but you don’t think it’ll happen. Therefore, you’re sabotaging your own attempts. Whenever you catch yourself feeling negative about the situation you’re trying to attract, refocus on your intention. You can use an affirmation or some kind of visual to bring you back to a feeling of trust. If you catch yourself in that negative space again, simply interrupt the pattern and fire the new pathway. Eventually, that new pathway will become your healthier norm.
Some habits can take longer to drop than others. Sometimes we can do it alone, but sometimes we need support from a coach or a teacher. Either way, one thing I can tell you for certain is that your very best tool along the way is a sense of humour. As hard as life can sometimes seem, if you can lighten up a little and not take things so seriously, you’ll be much better off!
