Beauty Boot Camp 101
Everyone knows maintaining an exercise routine is essential for your health, but did you know that it’s also good for your complexion? When you break a sweat and get your heart rate going, circulation increases throughout the body, boosting skin with oxygenated blood, which increases detoxification and cellular turnover. A good workout session can also help eliminate cellular toxins from your system, which improves hormonal imbalances that trigger breakouts. Keep hitting the gym for those full-body benefits and incorporate these training tips into your beauty routine. Give your skin the workout it needs!
Step 1: Daily Detox
It is crucial to remove the dirt and debris that builds on your skin’s surface throughout the day, and the most basic step in any skin care routine is cleansing. Washing your face twice a day is ideal – once in the morning and once at night, before going to bed. Use a good purifying cleanser with natural alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to gently exfoliate and detoxify the skin. Wash your face for a full 60 to 90 seconds before rinsing to allow the enzymes time to break down and remove the cellular debris.
Step 2: Complexion Cardio
Generally we think of cardio as various types of exercise that increase our heart rate, but when it comes to our beauty routine, the best cardio comes from regular exfoliation. Exfoliation gently sloughs away the top layer of dead skin, or releases the intercellular “glue” hanging onto the dead cells, thereby exposing fresh and healthy skin cells. Exfoliation can also unblock pores—leaving them open and more receptive to whatever topical products (serums or lotions, etc.) you choose to apply next. So, not only does exfoliation have its own benefits, but it makes your skin care treatments more effective, too. BONUS!
Warning
Exfoliating is essential to beautiful and glowing skin, but over-exfoliating can be harmful. It is possible to over-exfoliate, and your skin will be the first to speak up when you’ve gone too far. It’s recommended to exfoliate two or three times a week, so find a scrub or peel that suits your skin type and scrub-a-dub-dub!
Step 3: Strength Training
Traditional strength training forms muscle by working against some resistance, like weights or resistance bands. As we age, the production of collagen, an essential protein that acts as the framework for our skin, starts to slow. Furthermore, the elastin in our skin, which is responsible for keeping things nice and firm, demises and can even break. Start strength-training your skin and rebuilding lost collagen and elastin with peptides. Peptides (long or short chains of amino acids) are the building blocks of protein within the skin that can function as beneficial moisture-binding agents and assist in skin repair. One approach to repairing wrinkles and keeping your skin looking young is to replace lost or diminished collagen content. When collagen deteriorates, use peptides to act as a signal that tells your skin it was damaged and needs to make new collagen. Since peptides are small, they can penetrate the skin’s top protective barriers and work to get into the deeper layers. Incorporating serums or creams with peptides into your routine is a great way to enhance overall skin results and long-term benefits.
Step 4: Anti-Aging Intervals
Intervals involve fluctuating levels of workout intensity, thus burning more calories and fat than traditional exercises at a fixed speed. Your beauty routine can also benefit from intervals: don’t be afraid to mix things up!
Your morning and evening routines don’t have to be the same. You could load up with an antioxidant vitamin C serum and a protective SPF moisturizer during the day, while your evening regimen might consist of reparative nutrients like retinoid-based (vitamin A based) serums and a restorative eye cream or night cream. By using various skin nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin A, peptides, and plant stem cells, you can maximize the benefits and, ultimately, your results.
Step 5: Rest and Recover
That age-old saying of needing our “beauty sleep” is the real deal. A good night’s rest does a lot for us mentally and physically, but there are beauty benefits, as well. One of these is the skin’s ability to recover moisture, while other fluids and toxins are processed for removal from our bodies. When you don’t get adequate sleep, it can result in dehydrated skin and an insufficient moisture balance, leading to puffy bags and under-eye circles, as well as dryness, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Eight hours of sleep a night will leave you looking radiant, but keep in mind that beauty products are most effective overnight, because they penetrate better when you’re resting. Incorporate a nutrient-rich night cream into your evening routine to restore skin’s firmness and hydration levels.
